UNFINISHED HARDWOOD FLOORING SALES AND INSTALLATION

Custom Look

Choosing between prefinished and unfinished hardwood isn’t always easy. The big advantage of unfinished hardwood is that you get a lot more choice. Unfinished hardwood flooring can pretty much be customized however you want, which makes it a beautiful flooring option. This is where you’ll get the greatest level of control and freedom.

Installation Process

The installation process is a bit longer with unfinished wood flooring because of the staining and drying times required. If you need a hardwood floor installed fastprefinished hardwood might be a better option. As the leading flooring provider for Rhode Island and Massachusetts, Ace Flooring offers a wide variety in both styles of flooring.

Restoration

Unfinished hardwood flooring can be molded to a room and can be sanded to cover any subfloor imperfections. If repairs are necessary, they are far easier to make. Trim can be stained to match the planks. If you’re restoring a room in one of the beautiful older homes in Rhode Island or Massachusetts, unfinished hardwood is the option for you.

The Pros and Cons of Unfinished Hardwood Flooring
The Pros
  • Easier Repairs: Unfinished hardwood can be sanded and stained with a custom color, so it’s possible to make repairs to subflooring irregularities or match to existing wood floors. Prefinished wood flooring requires the entire room to be refinished or damage to be ripped out.
  • Easier Refinishing: The layer of finish is thinner, which makes it is far less difficult to sand down to the original board. This means that less of the wood will need to be sanded away in future, so more refinishing processes are possible.
  • Ability to adjust for subfloor irregularities: You can sand unfinished wood, so any subfloor irregularities can be compensated for because the wood can be sanded until it is all an even surface. Prefinished wood must be installed as is.
The Cons
  • Messier installation: The need for a sanding process means some dust and dirt.
  • Chemical odor while finishing: The process of finishing the boards includes a chemical smell from the stain, but it is temporary.
  • Longer installation period: The sanding and finishing has to be done on site, so it takes longer to install the boards and there is a drying period for the stain.

I went into Ace Wood Flooring’s showroom to get some ideas for the addition we built. Troy, the owner, let us take some samples home to see what would look best in our home.
