Unfinished wood floors allow you to create your own custom & unique look

Many of our Rhode Island and Massachusetts clients, wonder if they should buy unfinished or prefinished hardwood flooring. This depends a great deal on what you are looking for.  Unfinished hardwood flooring has more options and more ways to customize your home.  If you live in northern city areas like Cranston, East Providence, Warwick, or Lincoln, you might opt for one style.  Yet Rhode Islander’s in South County like Narragansett, Newport, North Kingstown, or Tiverton could have a different style. It’s a beautiful flooring option, and you get to select the finish or stain that perfectly complements your home.  However, the installation time for unfinished hardwood flooring is slightly longer, so if you are in a rush or not looking to just have the floors refinished and sanded, prefinished floors may be the solution for you.

Ace Wood Flooring

Prefinished and unfinished hardwood flooring differences

Unfinished flooring is hardwood that has been cut to be installed but has not been stained with a finish.

Prefinished hardwood is flooring that has been manufactured, stained, and dried in a factory setting.

As the leading flooring provider for Rhode Island and Massachusetts, Ace Flooring of Warwick and Smithfield offers a wide variety in both styles of flooring.

Here’s why you might want to consider unfinished hardwood floors for your next project

Unfinished hardwood flooring can be molded to a room, easily sanded to cover any subfloor imperfections, and customized to fit your unique space.  Maybe you are restoring a unique room in one of Rhode Island’s beautiful old Victorian homes in Warwick, East Greenwich, Narragansett, or Cumberland. You have more options for different stains and looks and if repairs are necessary, they are far easier to make.  The trim can be stained to match the planks much easier than prefinished hardwood floors.

Our clients are often intimidated by the concept of unfinished floors, until we break down the level of control and freedom they have if they pursue this avenue. We admit, this flooring isn’t perfectly suited for every client. But that’s why we offer our free estimate option.

Our highly trained flooring experts will help walk you through your flooring decision and give you the guidance you need to make the best choice for your home. There are many parameters to consider before committing to a floor type, including:

  1. Your budget
  2. The desired look
  3. Level of traffic
  4. Type of conditions the flooring will incur

We take care of it all.  We make the process easy. Our hardwood flooring contractors will explain exactly how they will make the changes to your home and how the process of transforming your floors will work. At Ace, you’ll know the advice you’re getting comes from years of experience, and you will be at ease with the confidence you have all the facts.

Hardwood flooring can be difficult to install correctly, which is why some homeowners throughout RI and MA shy away from it.

However, when you work with Ace Flooring, you’re given what we like to call our …

5 day promise

What’s that mean? Well, simply put: All of our jobs are completed within five days of receiving a call.  We pride ourselves for always “answering the phone” and reliable service to Rhode Island and Massachusetts.  We know your life is on pause until our team completes the flooring project.  Our goal is to ensure your wood floors are amazing as quickly as possible to make your life as easy as possible.

The Pros:

  • Easier Repairs – Due to the easier sanding process on unfinished wood, repairs are much easier to perform than on prefinished wood, which requires either an entire room refinishing process or the damage to be ripped out.
  • Easier Refinishing – Because the layer of finish is thinner, it is far less difficult to sand down to the original board.  This means that less of the wood will need to be sanded away, which means more refinishing processes are possible.
  • Able to adjust for subfloor irregularities – Because you can sand unfinished wood, any subfloor irregularities can be compensated for because the wood can be sanded until it is all an even surface, unlike prefinished wood which must be installed as is.

  • Messier installation – The need for a sanding process means a little dust and dirt.
  • Chemical smell while finishing – The process of finishing the boards includes a chemical smell from the stain, but it is temporary.
  • Longer installation period – Because the sanding and finishing has to be done on site, it takes longer to install the boards, and there is a drying period for the stain.

In the end, we strongly encourage you to meet with our specialists, or come visit one of our two showrooms in Smithfield or Warwick, Rhode Island. Once we get to know more about your specific needs, we can suggest the right type of flooring for you. Contact us now to learn more!
